Northeast Sicily
The Northeast part of Sicily offers optimal destinations for the adventurer as for families. Etna area is perfect for skiing, trakking, hiking and climbing, while the seaside offers Mediterraneans most beautiful beaches with white and black sand. This part of the island is often effected by volcano eruptions from Etna. The most devestating eruption was 1669 when the lava reached Catania and the Mediterranean sea. The environment around Etna is built from eruptions and the soil is very nutrient thanks to minerals from the volcano. The black volcano stone has always been used in construction. The sea by the coast is called the Ionian sea. Here also three seas meet that makes the water current in some places. The coast by Giarre and surroundings has fresher and clear water thanks to rivers coming from Etna.
The first colonisation happened 734 B.C. by greeks when they created Naxos, that provided Sicily with richness and culture. Unfortunately not much is left from the great greek era because of volcano eruptions. Naxos is today known as Giardini-Naxos and has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in north east Sicily. Taormina is also a well know destination that offers a cultural trip and is the host to Taormina Film Festival with an international celebrity sight-seeing.
First tourists were rich europeans in 1700 during their great round trip. Today this area has many visitors thank to its environment, pleasent climate, agriculture and Etna that also provides winter activities.
Top destinations in this area are Taormina, Etna and Eolian Islands. Also fishing villages like AciTrezza and AciCastello, and AciReale for its carneval, and Catania for its architecture, nightlife, markets, culinary experience and undergound greekroman city. This area is great for a road trip starting from Catania up north and coming back by the mountain towns of Etna. In the north you can make a fabulous boat ride to the volcanic Eolian Islands, also called Lipari, created by eruptions and famous for its green hills and black sand touched by the crystal Mediterranean waters.
